Over 125,000 people die each year from lack of adherence to their prescription. Additionally nearly 25 percent of hospitalizations occur because patients did not take their medicine correctly, or at all. These factors cost the healthcare system approximately $100-$300 billion annually. One in five people never fill their prescriptions and those that fill their prescriptions, 50 percent never take it correctly. By 2020, projections indicate health care spending will account for 20% of the US gross domestic product. My application looks to help minimize these costs by addressing the important aspects of prescription drug adherence like time-management, refills, dosage, and additional requirements provided by the doctor or pharmacist. Having a simple application, avoiding all the unnecessary menus, UI widgets and other unhelpful functionality, will help with accessibility. With these in place, these tools should assist the user in taking their medicine on time, as well as keep up with any changes to their prescription list through serialized objects, background alarm management, and an offline database. Our objective is that with this application there will be an increase in regularity of medicine intake, consistent dosage, an increase in prescriptions filled, and prescriptions regularly refilled correctly.
