Witches have been subjects of our taboo interest in the occult long before films were being produced. In fact, myths and legends of witches can be traced all the way back to the beginning of human kind. Many women throughout history have been sent to their untimely deaths for fitting the description of a witch: beautiful, powerful, independent. Persecution of women seen as witches peeked in the dark ages, coining the term “witch hunts.” In past years film and television have flipped the script on the idea of traditional witches, steering away from the previously depicted evil witch. A growing feminist movement is paving the way towards new ideas, and it is taking witches with it. The new conception of witches is that of equality, empowerment, and freedom.
